The Bodacious Bird

Who knew South Dakota pheasants were such bodacious birds? For those of you who know the layout of the Lodge, Bob and I live on a gravel road about a mile from the Lodge as the crow flies. I was on my way to work one morning early in the fall. I don’t even think hunting season had started yet. I turned the corner passing one of the corn fields and just at the end of the corn field I see this male pheasant come out in the road. Most of the time they are just cruising from one place to another and pretty much in a hurry to get back to some cover. Not this bird. He sees me coming and decided the road was his for the taking. I’m not sure if he thought my gold colored SUV was a threat or not, but he was not giving an inch. I kept thinking he would run off the road. Nope.  He starts running straight for my car. I’m thinking this crazy bird must have a death wish. I don’t want to hit him so I slow down, and he is still running at my car at full tilt. Right at the last second he runs off the side of the road.

I believe in his mind he established his dominance and that’s probably all he wanted.  I’m sure all the lady birds that were watching thought he was something special, king of the road don’t you know. As for me that was my first pheasant show down. I was happy he relinquished the road and there was not damage to the bird or my car, and so ended my first personal encounter with a South Dakota pheasant.

“Wow” Part Two — What a place!

More reflections bring more Wows!

  • Wow! –  What a sunset – I have seen many a sunset in many different locations around our beautiful country and the Caribbean, but the sunset over Lake Oahe from the back of the lodge is again, something you just have to see!
  • Wow! – Chef Carl’s black mission fig pheasant entrée – it just doesn’t get any better than that!
  • Wow! – What a morning! A limit of greenheads on the North Platte River with my best hunting buddies, my son Rob and that guy Jim McKenzie who married my gorgeous daughter, Kerri!
  •  Wow! – What a group! The Abreu crowd from Georgia! Good ol’ Southern Boys literally having a blast, stacking up the pheasants for three days straight! And Carl served them Grits too!
  • Wow! – What a staff! Multiple large groups, an unprecedented three outdoor writer hunts and the introduction of two new guns for two different gun manufacturers. And they all held it together! What a team!
  • Wow! – Cheyenne Ridge Signature Lodge … the first Beretta Trident rated lodge in the world!!!
  • Wow! – What an exciting year we have ahead of us! SHOT Show and SCI, look out, here we come!
  • Wow! – I could just keep going on and on!

We’d love to hear your stories of the Wows you’ve experienced at Cheyenne Ridge, and look forward to the opportunity to Wow you again!  As always, “Our House is Your House!”

Brit’s Bits ~ Greetings from the Corner Office

Greetings from the Corner Office!  As Controller for Cheyenne Ridge Outfitters & Lodge, Inc., I, Brittany Dodson, have recently spent several hours reflecting on 2009.  Working behind the scenes gives a person a totally different outlook on lodge happenings.  Combine that with being a Weinreis before marrying my wonderful husband, and you get someone very loyal, proud of, thankful and committed to Cheyenne Ridge Outfitters and Lodge.

The year 2009 brought many changes to Cheyenne Ridge.  I’d have to say the best is our core staff we have in place.  Never before in all the years of my involvement with Cheyenne Ridge, have I worked with such talented, knowledgeable and fun team members.  It is a true treat learning from and enjoying each and every one of them.

To make this even better, never before have I heard such great, encouraging stories about our guest’s experiences on their South Dakota pheasant hunting and walleye fishing trips and Nebraska duck hunting and whitetail hunting trips .  This says a lot, and is thanks to our loyal customers for this pride I have in our team and in our company.  We enjoy learning from and getting to know each of you as well.  You are making history in our story.  South Dakota pheasant hunting will never be the same once you walk through our doors.  Thank you to everyone who visited Cheyenne Ridge in 2009 and making it a memorable year.  I sure hope to see your names cross my desk again!

“Wow” Part One — What a place!

When I sit and reflect over the last four months as General Manager of Cheyenne Ridge Signature Lodge and The Outposts, the word “Wow” often comes to mind.

So in no particular order other than the first you see, which is what Cindy (my wonderful wife) and I said to each other when we first arrived at CRSL, here they are:

Wow! – What a place!!! Cheyenne Ridge Signature Lodge is something you have to experience to really appreciate! Words, websites and pictures just do not do it justice! Ya’ll have to see it to believe it!

Wow! – I’m looking out my office window as I write and there is a gorgeous mule deer buck and two does walking down the hill across from the lodge. Everything is still pretty much covered with snow other than the corn stalks standing in the fields and some taller brush, so they stand out in contrast. Not a bad view!

Wow! – What a great family to be working for … The Weinreis Family with their roots so deeply set in North and South Dakota as well as Nebraska soils. It gives all of us as employees a sense of security in these otherwise tumultuous times.

Wow! – Look at those birds! A covey of flushing quail cannot hold a candle to the first flurry of pheasants I saw getting up at the end of one of our block and drive hunts!

If you want to be Wowed or to Wow a friend, partner or business associate, invite them to join you at Cheyenne Ridge Signature Lodge, The North Platte Outpost, or one of our other Outpost operations!

Check back next week for “Wow” Part Two! And remember: “Our House is Your House!”
